Men’s Fashion Through the Decades: the 2000′s and 2010′s

Good to see you again, Artvictus community! We’re glad you came back for the last installment of our look at men’s fashion through the decades. So far, we’ve remembered the loud Hawaiian shirts of the 1940’s and 1950’s, grooved with the bell bottom pants of the 1960’s and 1970’s, and shuddered at the memories of popped collars of the 1980’s and 1990’s. Today we complete our journey with a look at the 2000’s and 2010’s.

What was Happening in the World

Unfortunately, this generation began with an event that is all too memorable for too many of us – the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 when terrorists flew planes into two of the World Trade Center towers in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington. This triggered a military conflict in the Middle East to hunt down those responsible that would eventually lead to fall of Saddam Hussain’s rule and the beginning of democracy in Iraq.

A resurgent Apple turned the technology market on its head in October 2001 with the first release of a portable media player called the iPod, and followed with the release of the first generation of its iconic iPhone in June 2007 and iPad in April 2010. Thus sparked the race to get better, faster and – ultimately – cooler between Blackberry, Samsung, LG and Microsoft.

In 2007 the world began slipping into the worst economic decline since the Great Depression. That lasted until 2009, the same year that America swore in its first African American President in Barack Obama. (And it doesn’t escape us that President Obama is one sharply dressed fella!)

On the Entertainment Scene

In movies, these two decades seemed to see the rebirth of the superhero. The X-Men, Batman, Spiderman, Dardevil, Hulk, Fantastic Four and Iron Man franchises all releasing big screen blockbusters.

Artvictus-Fashion-Through-the-Decades-2000's-2010's-wardrobe-malfunctionThe Simpson kept on charming us through these decades. Based on the dysfunctional antics of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie, the show that premiered in the late 1990’s is still going strong into its 26th season. With 557 (and counting) episodes it is the longest running American sitcom in history.

During Superbowl XXXVIII in February 2004 Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson made the world raise a collective eyebrow with their “accidental” “wardrobe misfunction”. Nothing wrong with that, we didn’t think … ;)

Men’s Fashion Trends

Artvictus-Fashion-Through-the-Decades-2000's-2010's-Jennifer-LopezWe saw some retro styles re-emerge through the 2000’s and 2010’s. These decades began with baggy cargo pants and low-riding jeans being the “in” look for men. Velour tracksuits and fitted skinny jeans came back into style. Geek chic caught the spotlight for a short while, when oversized black horn rimmed glasses, suspenders and other “geeky” fashion accessories were on trend.

With a quick nod (or wink) to women’s fashion, we were also blessed by women’s crop tops and low rise pants through the early 2000’s. We saw many a flat tummy during those years and we didn’t mind that one bit.

Fashion Icons of the Time

Justin Timberlake reigned supreme through the 2000’s and 2010’s. The former NSYNC member branched out on his own and starred in Hollywood blockbuster “The Social Network” in 2011. JT always sports some awesome threads and has the versatility to rock a pair of jeans and t-shirt or a finely tailored shirt and suit.

Artvictus-Fashion-Through-the-Decades-2000's-2010's-Johnny-DeppWe saw a lot more of David Beckham than we bargained for as the British soccer star teamed up with H&M to release his own underwear line. Beckham sported many looks through his time on the world stage and dazzled us many times at the numerous awards shows and special events he and wife Victoria Beckham attended.

Johnny Depp always lead the way in fashion during this time. He has always had a creative and uncanny sense of fashion and his success in some of the most successful movies of the time meant he had plenty of opportunity to show it off.

Conclusion

That does it, Artvictus men! We’ve busted through the decades one by one from the 1940’s, and our final pitstop took us back to a time before iPhone’s and wardrobe malfunctions.

We hope you’ve had as much fun reading as we have creating this series, and stay tuned to our blog because with the number of days until Christmas slowly but surely counting down we’re going to be discussing some great Christmas present ideas.
